The Elephant & Castle History

Elephant & Castle derives its name from a tube station in London that caught the fancy of young George Schwartz. His family had escaped Germany because of WWII.

Young George passed the station on his way to medical school. After graduating, he was an oncologist at St Vincent’s Hospital in Greenwich Village. After 20 years, George retired and fixed a problem at the hospital … unsatisfactory lunches. In 1973, he opened the first Elephant & Castle in Greenwich Village across from the hospital.

No more unsatisfactory lunches for George or anyone else at the hospital unless it was the patients. Elephant & Castle became a success, and George opened other restaurants, including Keens Steakhouse in Upper Midtown. Keens Steakhouse regularly ranks in the NY Times’ Top Five Restaurants.

On a 1980s visit to Dublin, George and his wife saw an area in Temple Bar similar to the original Elephant & Castle location. They were inspired to add a new offspring to the herd. They chose an old medical apothecary as the location. The new restaurant opened during Christmas in 1989.

By spring, it became a success. In 2018, the Elephant & Castle herd started expanding throughout Dublin.

Elephant & Castle serves their celebrated wings, gourmet burgers, and homemade desserts daily for lunch, dinner, and brunch on Saturday and Sunday. You may be tempted to indulge in your favorites when you visit. However, do yourself a favor, and sample other items on the menu.

From the appetizers and sharing dish menu, you can enjoy wings, dirty chicken, Caesar salad, a charcuterie board, ribs, hummus, or avocado toast. The main course menu offers salads, soups, risotto, burgers, tuna sandwiches with guacamole, and chicken, steak, or vegetarian sandwiches.

During the weekend brunch, enjoy a breakfast platter, a variety of eggs, omelettes, pancakes, French toast, yogurt, chicken wings, dirty chicken, seafood chowder, crab cakes, steak, bacon, sausage, salads, burgers, and their homemade sandwiches.

If you order dessert, you can indulge in ice cream, sorbet, sundaes, fruit, carrot cake, cheesecake, or pecan pie. You can choose to drink tea, coffee, and hot chocolate.

Kids Friendly

Kids receive activity packets to entertain them while they wait for their food. The kids’ play area features a castle with a slide. A ramp enters a tower to the front, and another enters the upper level. Kids exit an upper door and go down the slide. They can also enter the lower part.

Elephant & Castle supports sustainability. They choose environmentally-friendly food containers. Since they offer delivery and takeaway, they do use single-use food packaging. However, all of the containers are recyclable or compostable.

They ask that you rinse and recycle the foil wraps, milkshake cups, and ice cream cups. All of their other packagings can be composted
