I’ve always believed that the soul of a good night out lies in the quality of its pubs, and when it comes to finding the best ones, I’ve got a knack for sniffing them out. The perfect pint, a lively atmosphere, and the kind of charm that wraps around you like a warm blanket on a chilly evening; that’s what I’m after. And let me tell you, I’ve found some gems that tick all those boxes and then some.
There’s something magical about walking into a pub where the craft beer flows as freely as the conversations, where the music adds just the right backdrop to tales old and new. It’s not just about quenching your thirst; it’s about feeding your soul with stories, laughter, and maybe a bit of mischief.
And the live music? It’s the heartbeat of the evening, setting the rhythm for every clink of glasses and shared smile. Have you ever found yourself tapping your foot without even realising it, completely swept up in the moment? That’s when you know you’re in the right spot.
☝️ How we rated the services below:
Finding the perfect pub in Rathmines involves more than just picking a spot at random. Here are the criteria we used to guide our selection:
- Atmosphere and Character: We sought pubs that offer a warm, welcoming vibe, where the ambience enhances the overall experience. Whether it’s through historic charm or modern flair, the setting matters to us.
- Quality of Drinks: A top-notch pub needs an impressive selection of beverages, from craft beers to fine whiskeys. We looked for establishments that take pride in their drink menu, offering both variety and quality.
- Service and Hospitality: Friendly, attentive staff make a good pub experience great. We value establishments where the staff go above and beyond, making everyone feel like a regular.
- Live Music and Entertainment: For us, entertainment is key. Pubs that host live music nights or have engaging entertainment options scored higher on our list, as they contribute to a memorable night out.
- Food Menu: While not the main attraction, a great pub should serve delicious, comforting food that complements the drinks. We considered the quality and variety of the pub fare on offer.

Martin B. Slattery
⭐ An Unfiltered Assessment of Martin B. Slattery:
Martin B. Slattery, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Rathmines, Dublin. From the moment I stepped inside this ancient pub, I was transported back in time to an era where pubs were more than just watering holes but community gathering places. The warmth and charm of Martin B. Slattery immediately enveloped me, making me feel like a regular customer even though it was my first visit.
Upon entering, I was drawn towards “the nook,” a quaint closed small room adjacent to the bar. It provided the perfect space for intimate conversations with close friends while being just steps away from the attentive bartender who made sure our glasses were never empty. This strategic location added an extra layer of sophistication to our evening.
What struck me most about Martin B. Slattery is its commitment to preserving tradition and authenticity. Unlike many modern establishments overwhelmed with giant TV screens, this establishment stands as one of a dying breed – a true Dublin pub experience that focuses on quality conversation rather than flashes and distractions.
The pint of stout that I sipped at Martin B. Slattery was exceptional – rich and velvety, satisfying my taste buds in every way possible. From the sloping floors that hadn’t been “fixed” (thankfully!) to adding an irresistible quirkiness to the place, every corner oozed with character and nostalgia.

Kodiak, Rathmines – a hidden gem that is sure to satisfy your cravings for delicious food and amazing cocktails. I recently celebrated my birthday here and let me tell you, the service was absolutely brilliant! From the moment we walked in, the friendly staff made us feel right at home. And oh my, the pizza! It was simply divine – perfectly crispy yet chewy dough topped with truffle and orange zest that left me craving for more. This has definitely become one of my favorite pizzas in Dublin.
But it’s not just about the pizza. Kodiak offers a great selection of beers and their cocktail menu is out of this world. As someone who considers themselves a mixologist, I was pleasantly surprised by the whisky sours they served – next level experience indeed!

Humphrey’s Pub
⭐ Our Unvarnished Impressions of Humphrey’s Pub:
Humphrey’s Pub, a gem nestled in the heart of Dublin, is an absolute delight for beer enthusiasts and those seeking a vibrant social scene. As I stepped into this cosy establishment on Ranelagh Street, I was immediately drawn to its welcoming atmosphere. The pub boasts an incredible beer garden that is simply perfect for soaking up the sunny weather whilst enjoying a pint or two.
The highlight of Humphrey’s Pub for me was undoubtedly their fantastic Beer Garden. With ample seating and lovely heaters available for when the temperature drops, it truly offers a little slice of heaven. On top of that, there are plenty of TVs outside showing all the latest sports action – ideal for cheering on your favorite team with friends.
While everything about Humphrey’s Pub has been exceptional so far, there were just a couple of minor hiccups along the way. Firstly, their taco hut in the back area didn’t quite live up to expectations. Although reasonably priced at first glance, they turned out to be rather small and overly oily – not exactly what one hopes for in a delicious taco experience.
Overall though, these tiny shortcomings pale in comparison to all that Humphrey’s Pub has to offer. From its warm ambiance to its impressive selection of beers (although perhaps too many IPAs), it remains a beloved spot amongst locals and visitors alike. It’s no wonder why people keep flocking back throughout summer! So why wait? Head over to Humphrey’s Puband indulge yourself in some well-deserved fun!
👍 Our Reasons for Recommending:
- Fantastic Beer Garden, perfect for sunny weather
- Lovely heaters outside for chilly evenings
- Plenty of TVs showing sports for game enthusiasts

TapHouse
⭐ Our Honest Opinion of TapHouse:
TapHouse, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Dublin’s Ranelagh town center, is an absolute delight for food and drink enthusiasts alike. As an American, I was initially skeptical about finding a place that could rival the taste sensations of New York City and USA, but TapHouse exceeded all expectations.
From the moment I walked through the door, the attentive and friendly staff made me feel right at home. The ambiance was uniquely inviting with books adorning every corner, giving it a cool pub vibe that instantly won me over. With each floor offering its own distinct atmosphere and a charming terrace to enjoy on beautiful days, TapHouse truly had something for everyone.
But let’s talk about the food – seriously good bar food doesn’t even begin to cover it. Their smash burger and nachos were on par with some of the best I’ve ever had in NYC or anywhere else in America! Although I would have preferred a splash of sharper flavors on their nachos, they still stood out as a delicious treat. And let’s not forget about their scrumptious fries!
What sets TapHouse apart is their impressive selection of interesting beers which are constantly rotating. It’s like taking your taste buds on an adventure with every visit! While some may find the prices slightly higher than average, considering the quality of both food and drinks offered here along with impeccable service, it’s undoubtedly worth every penny.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing hangout spot during soccer or rugby matches or simply want to indulge in comforting bar cuisine paired with phenomenal drinks any time of year, TapHouse should be at the top of your list. Trust me; this place will leave you craving more long after you’ve left its doors behind.
