Best Bookshops in Dublin

Wandering into a bookshop and felt like you’ve stepped into a treasure trove of stories, history, and knowledge? That’s exactly how I feel every time I set foot in one of Dublin’s charming bookshops. It’s like entering a world where every shelf and corner whispers tales of far-off lands, intriguing characters, and thought-provoking ideas.

My love for these literary havens began on a drizzly afternoon, seeking refuge and, perhaps, a new read. What I found was much more—a community of fellow book lovers, eager to share their latest finds and favourite reads. It’s this sense of camaraderie and discovery that makes each visit special.

And let me tell you, the variety is astounding! From dusty old classics to the latest bestsellers, each bookshop has its own personality and speciality. Have you ever lost track of time browsing through stacks of books, each one promising a new adventure?

☝️ How we rated the services below:

Selecting the best bookshops in Dublin involves careful consideration of various factors that contribute to an enriching book-buying experience. Here are our top criteria:

  • Variety and Selection: We value shops that offer a wide range of genres, including rare finds and the latest releases, to cater to every reader’s taste.
  • Ambience and Layout: The atmosphere and physical setup of the bookshop is crucial. We look for inviting spaces that encourage browsing and discovery, with well-organized shelves and cosy reading nooks.
  • Staff Knowledge and Friendliness: Engaging with knowledgeable and friendly staff enhances the shopping experience. We appreciate bookshops where the staff are eager to offer recommendations and share insights about books.
  • Events and Community Engagement: We consider bookshops that host events, such as author signings and book clubs, highly valuable. These activities foster a community of book lovers and offer additional reasons to visit.
  • Location and Accessibility: Convenience in reaching the bookshop is important. We prefer locations that are easily accessible by public transport or offer parking facilities, making it straightforward for everyone to visit.

Hodges Figgis

Make sure to use rich and powerful words when you write a review.

Hodges Figgis is one of the most remarkable bookstores I have ever visited in my life. Located conveniently near Dawson Luas station, this four storey building is an absolute delight boasting traditional yet welcoming vibes. Whether it be fiction, non-fiction, or foreign literature – Hodges Figgis has certainly got you covered!

The selection of books here compromises all genres imaginable with its top notch range, putting other bookstores to shame. Not to mention the sheer abundance of classic Terry Pratchetts novel and boardgames taking up almost an entire shelf! As if that wasn’t enough; they also boast some excellent deals on artwork hanging around at moderate prices making it a fantastic choice as a gift for friends or family members.

My experience visiting Hodges Figgis was truly seminal and I wouldn’t hesitate for even a second recommending others to go there as well. After all; what could be more rewarding than getting lost between apical readings oozing out nostalgic warmth? If you are someone passionate about books then give this stellar place reigned by hardcovers annals a chance -you won’t regret it!

Chapters Bookstore

The Chapters Bookstore is by far the best bookstore I’ve ever been in. The wide selection of both new and used books makes it a great resource for avid readers. They have thousands of titles to choose from, whether you’re looking for fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks, children’s literature or something more specific! Plus the shelves are constantly being restocked with new arrivals.

But what makes this store really amazing is that they buy your old books. So if you’re feeling generous and wanting to declutter your home while making some money at the same time; bring them in and get store credit or cash as payment depending on what you prefer.

Lastly there are walls completely plastered with post-it notes displaying quotes and other recommendations written by customers who enjoyed their visit here so much that they wanted to share something special about it – all of which adds special charm to this already warm atmosphere created by friendly staff members who love helping any book lover out! Without a doubt this service is certainly worth visiting if not only for its variety but also how genuine their customer experience feels like when entering one of Dublins century-old landmarks!

Really creative displays of all their books. Great selection of Irish language and international books.

The staff is knowledgeable, helpful and welcoming – always ready to answer your questions or offer advice on a book choice. There’s also a great variety of other products such as stationeries, postcards, cute gifts etc. I love the familiar atmosphere created by its passionate owners who treat visitors like friends rather than customers!

One of my favorite things about this place is that there’s a cafe upstairs where you can grab a cup of coffee and soak in some reading vibes: comfy chairs, magazine racks and friendly conversations around between book lovers make the experience even more special! Books Upstairs offers something for everyone – from children’s literature to antique volumes – so it’lltruly feel like you’ve entered into an oasis away from city hustle & bustle.. Stokes Books

Stokes Books, tucked away in the George’s Street Arcade in Dublin 2 is a bookworm’s Nirvana! Through their wide array of topics covered, I was able to stumble upon particular books that further enhanced my knowledge. From Irish history and beautiful collections of classical literature – even recommended by the owner himself – Stokes Books offers an extremely unique experience. Not only this but it also gives you the opportunity to peruse about for truly discounted prices; way below market retail value which makes your financial spending more worth it without compromising quality!

The owner Stephen proved nothing less than an absolute knowledgeable gentleman who greeted me with such enthusiasm. His genuine passion drove him not just as one looking to make a sale but instead he made sure his customers’ interests are kept at heart before anything else. What better place could you be than being welcomed into such a wholesome atmosphere?

I cannot recommend Stokes Books highly enough if you ever decided yourself or someone else needs something special. Now while times have changed much due to Covid-19 protocols put in place, they were still dedicated enough not miss out on ensuring families get their hands on any available reads given their circumstances…all achieved through dedicated phone service arrangements!

Book Worms

Visiting Book Worms is an experience like no other. The shop has a great old Irish charm to it, with racks of interesting books and charming customers browsing their wares. Staffed by incredible personalities, the staff at Book Worms are knowledgeable in all things literary – far more than just book names. They have an infectious passion that leaves you wanting to return over and over again despite the small size of the store!

Book Worms provide some fantastic prices on classic books as well as out-of-print ones too, so you can save money while getting your hands on something special. Jim at the counter is especially helpful if there’s something obscure or specific you’re looking for; he always goes above and beyond to source those hard to find gems. His chats about literature with my mother were absolutely fascinating!

I am devastated that this place is being gutted inside by builders with a skip outside but would like to encourage everyone who loves a good read to check out what this wonderful establishment had to offer before it closes its doors forever — truly worth visiting once during your stay in Dublin!

Alan Hanna’s Bookshop

I’ve been a customer of Alan Hanna’s Bookshop for several years now and I must say that everytime I visit, I am absolutely delighted by their selection. With nearly 100 years worth of experience as a family business, it’s no wonder that they have such a fantastic range to choose from. From children’s books to university texts, romances to classic fiction, even educational toys and games! No matter what your interests are or what you may be looking for – there is something here just waiting to strike your fancy.

Beyond their literature offerings (which no doubt make them stand out) Alan Hannah also hosts a cozy coffee shop within the premises – tucked away at the back of the bookshop itself. This is where customers can sit down with friends or family and enjoy some delicious snacks like kimchi sandwiches, candy lattes or frappucinos; all while being surrounded by shelves full of wonderful stories. The atmosphere here is perfect for tackling some last-minute homework questions (thanks largely in part to free wi-fi!) Or if you’re on the go and need somethig quick — takeout options are available too!

Finally — if there was any qualms about money when considering visiting this store don’t worry; because with student/teacher discounts available for certain services plus expenses made more manageable through mail order catalogues timesheets vouchers? Affordable shopping experiences wait behind every corner at Alan Hannas Bookshop — truly making them an absolute delight!
